Lean On Me – RecordYou Isolation Choir

The studio is closed to the public for the near future in order to observe the COVID-19 social distancing recommendations but that won’t stop us from making some music! We’d love you to join us in getting as many people as possible to sing the beautiful and apt lyrics of Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me”. We will share the happy and supportive message with friends and family that we are all there to help each other carry on. And if the fun of taking part isn’t enough, everyone who takes part gets a €25 voucher!

At the end of the day, we all need somebody to lean on.

Absolutely every experience level is welcome and no fancy equipment is required at all! We are lucky with the technology we have these days – all you need is your mobile phone! We have broken the song up into three parts and you are free to do as few or as many parts as you feel like. Although the more we have, the better and it would be great if everyone did at least Part A! Part A has a fun clapping section in the middle! Parts B and C are your time to shine with some lead vocals!

A previous client, the fantastic Sorcha Fenlon will demonstrate each of the sections for you. And here is an idea of the song – although it will get even better when we have more of your wonderful voices:

I’m in! How do I do it?

You will need:

  • a camera (phone, tablet, DSLR that can record video etc.)
  • another device to play the backing track while you are filming (e.g. a laptop, another smartphone etc.)
  • headphones – any at all – the basic pair that come with your smartphone are absolutely fine. It’s just so you can hear the backing track but we only hear your beautiful voice.
  • The lyrics – available here.
  • Your voice!

Find instructions for each part below. There are a few different versions of backing tracks depending on what suits you best – some with a click track, some without and one without the guide vocals at all if that helps you. You can download them or play them straight from this web page. Bookmark this page so you can come back to it when you’re ready to move on to the next part or upload your videos.

Download the lyrics for all parts by clicking here.

Set up your phone/camera in a well-lit area in landscape mode (on its side) so you end up centred in the shot like the example.

Play the backing track on your second device with headphones plugged in. This handy graphic should explain it simply. Rehearse it as many times as you need to and then:

Hit record on your camera/phone and sing your heart out! Again, do as many takes as you like. It may sound strange to you without the full track behind you but trust us, it will be beautiful once we add it all together.

The sample videos should give you an idea of the framing and the vocal-only sound we need. And Sorcha only used her iPhone and a tablet, so honestly, anyone can do this! Don’t hesitate to comment below or send us an email if you need any further help getting set up.

Repeat for the next part if you like or else go ahead and send it – instructions in the next step. And it doesn’t matter if you don’t sing every bit of every part – just do what you can – the magic of this is that there will be so many others alongside you, to help you carry on and together making a big powerful rendition of this beautiful song!

Upload your handiwork by going here:

You do not need a Dropbox account for this to work and should work from your smartphone. The videos will be quite large so it may take some time. Patience is a virtue. Make sure you put in a correct email address so we can thank you and send you your voucher.

If you’d prefer, you could use a free service like WeTransfer and email us a link to [email protected]. Your video will probably not send via email due to the file size, but feel free to shoot us an email if you have any issues at all and we will guide you through sending it. In fact, if you have any questions at all regarding the project, we would love to hear from you.

Ready to go? Download the lyrics below and get going!

Please get us your videos by the 28th of June. We will start putting the video together and email you a link once it’s finished. Sending us a video counts as your consent to use it and send you emails with stuff like your voucher and the link to share with your friends and family when the video is up. If you have any questions at all or are struggling with anything, don’t hesitate to get in touch either by email or by leaving a comment at the end of the page.

Part A – Backing Vocals & Claps

Let’s start things off nice and simply! We are going to make a big choral opening and ending to the number, with a fun clap section in the middle! The more people we have on this line the better. Doesn’t matter if you’re male or female. You can pick a high line or a low line – whatever suits your range. If you’re a bit adventurous, feel free to do a second version of just some nice harmonies and send them all!

There are 3 options of the backing track for you – two with a guide vocal with or without click track and one of just the backing track. And two sample videos – one of a high line and one lower.

The first count-in (Bar 1) is for the Um’s. The second count-in isn’t until about 2:15 in the track. This second count-in is to 16 bars of clapping on beat 2 and 4 and then straight into the end chorus. Have a quick listen to the track and it should all become clear!

Either do it all in one take or break it up. It’s up to you. We will be able to figure out which bit you are doing.

Part B – Lead Vocal Line 1

Start our song with a bang. This line opens the number and continues the lead throughout the song. Make it yours – as long as the timings match.

The guide is sung by a male, but it doesn’t matter at all. Have a quick watch of Sorchas sample for a female voice if required and then go belt it out!

Part C – Lead Vocal Line 2

Have fun with this one! Sing it loud! Again, it doesn’t matter if it’s a male or female voice. It doesn’t even matter if you can’t do it all. Sing what you can and it will all add to the huge sound we are after.

Remember to record with headphones in so we only hear your voice.

That’s all folks!

Thanks so much for making it this far! Hope you had everything you need to make a great video. If you had any issues at all do comment below and we or your peers will get back to you and support and help you in any way we can.

Go ahead and upload it using this link:

Also share away! The more people we have involved, the better the final video will be!

One final thanks and we genuinely can’t wait to hear your voices and put together a really powerful video.
